Law enforcement is spying on thousands of Americans’ mail, records show 🔎
Story by Drew Harwell | Washington Post
The mail covers program is used by postal inspectors to track down suspects or gather evidence. The practice is legal because they only share information outside the packages. They need a warrant to see what’s inside. The IRS, FBI, and DHS are among the top requesters of this information. This surveillance program is more revealing of one’s life that it seems at first glance – “the exteriors of mail could be deeply revealing for many Americans, giving clues about the people they talk to, the bills they pay, the churches they attend, the political views they subscribe to and the social causes they support.”
